It's pretty crazy and rather sad that The Landlord isn't available on DVD. Just look at the film's behind-the-camera credits: produced by Norman Jewison, cinematography by Gordon Willis, camera operation by Michael Chapman (DP on Raging Bull, Taxi Driver), screenplay by Bill Gunn, music by Al Kooper, and, of course, direction by Hal Ashby, his first film at the helm. Sadly this VHS rip isn't the best showcase for the cinematography, but it's better than nothing.
The film is a fascinating, seriocomic exploration of racial and economic conflict, all embellished with absurdist and abstract touches. Beau Bridges, Pearl Bailey, Lee Grant, and Diana Sands all feature and are all impressive.
